Be Cruelty-Free Week
This week is Be Cruelty-Free Week, a time set aside to raise awareness about ending animal testing for cosmetics. For me, every week is Be Cruelty-Free Week, don’t you think?
In fact, you do! According to a recent poll, 73 percent of American voters would support federal legislation that would end animal testing for cosmetic products and ingredients. A new bill, the Humane Cosmetics Act, was recently introduced in Congress, to do just that: ensure that no animals are harmed in the production of cosmetics. The Humane Cosmetics Act is the first-ever legislation to prohibit the manufacture and sale of animal-tested cosmetics. It was recently introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Jim Moran, D-VA. Those who want to support this bill can take action now.
Many brands have taken a pledge to ban animal testing in the creation and production of their products, but few have taken it as far as LOGOCOS Naturkosmetik (brands include Logona and Sante), which just won the Courage in Commerce Award from PETA for taking a stand and withdrawing all of its products from the lucrative market in China after receiving notice that, despite statements to the contrary, animal testing is demanded in order to register cosmetic products in China.
“We cancelled all our contracts with China and pulled out, and we are working with PETA to get Chinese authorities to stop animal testing,” says Marko Kucher, CEO of Logona. “But we don’t just want to pull out, we want to stop animal testing and present alternatives. We’ve started a campaign in Germany to stop animal testing worldwide.”
Beauty companies including Aubrey Organics, Biao Skincare, LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics and more have pledged their support for this bill. If passed, the Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 4148) would bring the U.S. up to speed with a global trend that is moving away from animal tested cosmetics.
We’d like to share this neat infographic, which not only offers up some great info, but also shares some tools that we all can use as a call to action.Tags: animal cruelty, animal testing, awareness, Be Cruelty-Free Week, cosmetics, ethical treatment of animals, LOGOCOS, PETA
