The art of yoga has existed for centuries, in one for or another, combining a person’s physical, mental and spiritual being in order to reach an inner peace and sense of tranquility. I know when I attempt the warrior three pose, the inner peace runs right through my shaking leg muscles. When embarking on the path to tranquility, a person’s surroundings should be an extension of what the overall goal is: peace.

Peace is what comes to mind in the Rocky River Green Home’s second floor yoga room that faces out toward the pristine Lake Erie. A spacious room withonly two wallscontaining it, the yoga room’sdécor is simple and free of clutter – something that can subconsciously creep into a persons spiritual workout. With large windows in virtually every wall, the yoga room becomes an extension of Mother Nature.

Walking up the stairs, the yoga room greets every guest with its rich Darby Brown bamboo flooring from Washington State’s Teragren. The Darby Brown stretches from wall to wall, providing a unique warmth and comfort not found in standard flooring. The dark, nine-coat finish makes the floor of the yoga room as cozy as it is durable, surpassing red wood and North American maple in durability tests. Couple that with 25 year finish warranty, Teragren assures their floors will be a spiritual canvas for years. All of the finishes on Teragren flooring are water-based and solvent-free supplying peace of mind before the first pose.

What’s almost more impressive than their flooring is Teragren’s commitment to preserving the state of the environment without compromising quality. For virtually 20 years, Teragren and their employees have made it their personal mission to reduce the use of our already dwindling forests by utilizing bamboo, a highly sustainable resource. The Chinese bamboo used is cultivated at five-to-six years of age to satisfy the maximum strength needed to manufacture superior flooring without overextending bamboo crops.

Teragren has always looked at restoring the environment in a broader light, taking into account every aspect of the process. It’s not just the planet who is in need of safeguarding, but those who help supply the bamboo and the leader in bamboo manufacturing makes sure the workers in China are treated with care and respect. LEED certifiable, Floorscore certification for emitting low VOCs along with being a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and the Business for Social Responsibility are just a few examples of why Teragren flooring spreads tranquility amongst everyone from farmer to floor.

Acting in harmony with the flooring is the zen touch of Arhaus Furniture, which is also featured in the living room, family room and bedrooms of the RRGH. What Arhaus brings to the yoga room, however, is soothing charm with a sense of organic living. To achieve this zen-like feel, the yoga room has no traditional seating, but rather is fitted with Arhaus Java bags. These over-sized, beanbag-type poof pillows are the perfect spot to relax after a session or just a nice change of “scenery” from the living room or the family room, and why not? The Belgian linen on the Java bags are so inviting with their reversed surged for an unassuming, casual feel.

To accent the Java chairs, the end tables from the Merritt Occasional Collection mirrors everything the yoga room (and the RRGH, for that matter) represents in the way of style and sustainability. Sitting just under two feet tall (the perfect complement to the Java chairs), the Merritt tables are fashioned from recovered branches found along the coast of Java, Indonesia. Each individual twig and branch are artfully assembled and coated in Carnauba wax forming a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture.

Yoga has been widely defined as meaning “union” or “to join.” A place where the spirit melds with the body and mind to achieve an everlasting state of peace and within the yoga room of the RRGH, the translation is quite appropriate. Bringing together design, sustainability, comfort and peace in an auspicious union is something Teragren and Arhaus have been able to accomplish for many people over many years and the yoga room is the proof. Namaste.

Do you know your ecological footprint? If not, it might be enlightening to find out through an online calculator such as the Ecological Footprint Quiz by Center For Sustainable Economy. Filling out the survey was one of my first assignments after I enrolled into the Master of Arts in Sustainable Design program at MCAD. The result showed my impact on the earth in regards to the number of earths required to support our population, assuming everyone had the same impact. Even that I considered myself living an eco-conscious life-style during that time, I was in shock about the outcome of 2.5 earths. That’s when I realized I had to make changes. My carbon, food, and housing footprints were fairly low since I take the subway to work and live in a small studio in Manhattan. But I had to look at other ways on how to reduce my footprint in regards to product consumption.

The obvious choice is to reuse what you have or buy second-hand. In addition, there are companies like Timberland that share my values of protecting the outdoors and minimizing our environmental footprint. Earthkeepers is Timberland’s most eco-minded collection. The footwear collection uses materials such as recycled PET linings, 42% recycled rubber soles, as well as organic cotton and leather from tanneries that are rated silver for their water, waste and energy management. Timberland goes so far as to grade their footwear with a Green Index rating to reflect their environmental impact based on climate impact, chemicals used and resource consumption. Its rating system goes from 0 to 10 and a lower score means a lower environmental footprint for the product.

Last week I tried on some Earthkeepers summer sandals at the Timberland store in Soho since window shopping is still fun. Both, the Whittier Leather Wedge Sandal and the Montvale Ankle Strap Sandal, were super comfortable. I didn’t buy anything since reusing what you have is still the greenest choice. When I looked at the label on the back of the wedge sandal I noticed a Green Index rating of 4. That’s definitely a stylish step in the right direction.

Welcome to Better Organic Choice (BOC), a column focusing on makeup, skincare and beauty tips, tricks and product advice for the holistically hip. We cover the best in green glam, behind the scenes and in your face (not your traditional crunchy granola here). We are here to help you explore all the beauty treatments you adore! Do you often worry if your beauty products are dangerous to your health? Are you dizzy from analyzing ingredients? Guiding you is my pleasure.

Ever since I was a little girl, I loved the bright lights of New York City and bright, shiny, colorful eye shadows. I was first drawn to makeup in the 70′s (totally just outed my age). Back then, it was all about disco and sparkle. I loved all of the shiny clothes and over-the-top sparkling eye shadow. In my teens, I always had a secret stash hidden away in a drawer. When I got a bad grade on a test or the boy I liked didn’t return the feeling, I would go home and put on my favorite Donna Summer album and play with my beautiful shades of sparkling shadows. I think it’s fair to say that sparkling eye shadows were my first obsession (who needs boys, anyway?).

For a successful celebrity makeup artist in the 90′s, MAC Cosmetics was the staple of every professional makeup kit, mine included. I especially loved the over-the-top colors and pigmentations of their eye shadows. When they came out with loose pigments, I was back once again in my sparking disco heaven.

My obsession with MAC pigments (and almost everything MAC) came to a halt when I had an allergic reaction that led to an emergency room visit when I applied a lipstick. I began to get rid of everything that contained perfumes and dyes. I will not say that MAC pigments are toxic (because most ingredients are fine) but, here is the safety guide they have listed on eBay:

Due to the origin of MAC as a professional cosmetic line, and the wide range of clients (from professional to general public) not all MAC products are designed with the average consumer in mind. This is often the case with many PRO products, as well as some pigments. The name pigment can be misleading, as they are not pure pigments, but rather highly-pigmented, multi-purpose loose color powders. Due to the pigments and dyes in some MAC pigments, they can be hazardous if used in various facial areas, mainly the eye or lip area.

So, due to my personal reaction to certain ingredients in my beloved MAC Pigments they just didn’t fit my life anymore. I think I cried upon this realization; what was I going to do without my sparkling eye shadow? How would I create the looks that, as a makeup artist, my clients depended on? Circa 2002, while scoping the beauty aisle in my favorite health food store in Maryland, I came across the most beautiful sparkling shadows by a company called No Miss. The beauty buyer explained to me that No Miss was a family owned company from Florida, and their line was completely non-toxic. Their eye shadows are as colorful and over-the-top as my beloved MAC pigments, without the dyes. I also think it’s cute that they name many of their shadows after places in Florida. Some of my favorites are Tampa Teal and Key West Silver.

I was so impressed that I called the company and spoke to Melissa, who was my first real educator in sustainable beauty, over 10 years ago. She explained to me the difference between toxic and non-toxic ingredients. I have grown to love the entire family team at No Miss and I visit them at industry shows once a year. They are always the most colorful booth on the block, showcasing new and exciting products. I must also mention that they have lip glosses, liners, mascaras, and nail polish that are just as fun and over the top as their shadows. Check out all of their fun products at nomiss.com

In 1989, I decided to launch ECOBAGS®, a brand of cloth shopping bags as an alternative to single-use plastic bags. ECOBAGS®, was ahead of its time, as public awareness of plastic’s impact on the environment was virtually non-existent, but we saw the future and were able to build a successful niche brand.

Ethical manufacturing was a key brand consideration and, soon enough, after exhausting options in the USA for my particular bag and, after a short stint with a producer in Germany, I found exactly what I wanted in a more than willing production partner in India. I didn’t go to India to reduce my costs, I went to India because I found the willingness and ability to produce the product I wanted for a reasonable price.

Having never traveled to India before, I didn’t make any assumptions, but I knew enough to focus on making sure my products were responsibly produced. How could I possibly pioneer the reusable bag movement with products made by captive, underpaid and/or poorly treated people? So, I set off to market with a range of products, adding “fair wage and fair labor” on all the hang tags and inside labels. Our core customers, those in the then-nascent National Products Industry, noticed our labels and tags and commitment, but most people didn’t even know what we were talking about. We talked about this in our marketing and later posted it on our website, but we didn’t make a huge deal about it because no one was really listening and we were going to do it anyway. It was a part of our DNA as a company.

We had many opportunities to lower our costs with other producers, to grow faster and make more money in the short term, but we understood that sustainability encompasses more than the environment. Fair labor practices and respect of human rights are also essential elements of sustainability. It took about 20 years for the fair wage/fair labor concept to be noticed by more than the fringe.

Though businesses have long taken advantage of cheap labor in developing world countries, turning a blind eye to horrific labor practices by their manufacturers, the devastating factory collapse in Bangladesh last month, followed by yet another factory fire this week, have brought this issue front and center in the public eye, making us all question the high cost of inexpensive goods.

So, what will it take to responsibly produce goods without harming others? It will take a desire to do so with a commitment to take the time to build strong relationships and require third-party certifications, and then get certifications to certify the certifications. The most important part of this is trust, and trust takes the longest to build. The bottom line is that not only can corporations operate profitably and ethically, they will have to since the cost of not doing so is beyond prohibitive, as evidenced by the death of nearly 1000 factory workers who lost their lives these past few weeks so that we can “buy one, get one free.”

To be perfectly honest, I didn’t expect to find much in Scottsdale, Arizona. When I left, though, I felt like I had discovered a hidden gem. Scottsdale is Phoenix’s cool little brother. It feels both like an upscale suburb and a ritzy small town. In late Winter and early Spring, the whole place transforms in a baseball mecca with fans from all over the world coming to town for Spring Training. The Cactus League is set up in Arizona and Scottsdale is the Spring home to the Giants, the Diamondbacks, and the Rockies (twelve other teams play in nearby cities). As a baseball-loving Green Guy, I felt like it was finally time to see what Spring Training was all about. This is my perfect day in Scottsdale:

Wake up at The Phoenician, a Scottsdale institution for 25 years. This enormous property sits right next to Camelback Mountain and whether you’re into golf, spa, or just plain relaxation, this is the spot to do it. I checked out the gorgeous Centre for Well-Being where I melted during an 80-minute holistic massage. The treatment was a mixture of techniques, but the hot stone work was a wonderful surprise. Make sure to budget extra time to enjoy the bright and airy Meditation Room where you can relax in a zero-gravity chair while reading a copy of Organic Spa Magazine.

After your spa time, get ready to play ball. Well, not play so much as watch. Depending on the day, you have plenty of baseball to see. I decided to drive out to Mesa, AZ because that’s where my beloved Cubbies play. I actually got to experience the very last game at HoHoKam Stadium because next year, the Cubs move to a brand new facility in Mesa called Wrigleyville West. It’s supposed to be incredible and I can’t wait to head back down to see it for myself. While you’re there, pick up lunch at Chuckie’s, a mobile food truck serving fried pork tenderloin sandwiches direct from Iowa where the Cubs have a AAA minor league team. Not the healthiest option, but when you’re watching a baseball, you can’t watch your figure, too.

The sun wears you out in Scottsdale, so head back to the Phoenician for a quick nap by one of their elaborate pools (with plenty of sunscreen on!). When you wake up, it’s dinner time. There are tons of great dining options in Scottsdale, but my absolutely favorite was Mastro’s City Hall. The venerable steakhouse chain started in Scottsdale and, in my opinion, they define the steakhouse genre. Get a bone-in ribeye, an enormous Manhattan, and some of their world famous butter cake and you won’t be hungry for days.

You’ll still have room for more drinks, though, and you can satisfy your craving at Citizen Public House. Mixologist and partner Richie Moe is bringing cutting edge cocktailing to Scottsdale with really amazing innovations like infusing gin at the table and barrel-aging spirits as if they were lost at sea. Knock back a few and then enjoy the warm breeze as you make your way back to your room. Perfect days always give way to perfect nights in the desert.

When it comes to things I buy, I have a tendency to focus on labels. Organic, natural, all natural, low carb, low fat, low alkaline, free range, free trade, gluten-free, cruelty-free, extra fiber, vitamin-enriched and vegan-friendly, along with many others, have all caught my eye while perusing the lanes of my grocery store, poking my head into a crowded stall at a farmer’s market, or sitting in the eerie light of my laptop, stalking the pages of Amazon in the middle of the night. I don’t claim to be a strict follower of any particular label, or even really to know what they all mean. I know there are lots of things I should look for my products to have or not have, but I couldn’t begin to tell you what they all are.

Despite this, labels still influence my purchases in an odd, almost subconscious way. This label-love is something that Chevrolet hopes to capitalize on in the future with their new EcoLogic scorecard. The label, like USDA Certified Organic or Leaping Bunny’s. cruelty-free certification, is a third-party audited certification that shows a certain level of accountability in the manufacturing of the product. The difference—besides the fact that the folks at Chevy took it upon themselves to create the scorecard—is that the EcoLogic scorecard displays the various ways that their vehicles lessen their impact on the environment.

© Chevrolet

The scorecard displays such interesting tidbits as:

85% by weight of some Chevy vehicles (Sonic, Malibu, etc.) are recyclable

Landfill gas powers more than 20% of their assembly

Many of their transmissions and engines are landfill-free

As well as various ways that these eco-features benefit the consumer:

Landfill gas means assembly facilities are less dependant on fossil fuels

Landfill-free parts means less waste and more resources

Recycling parts reduces landfill deposits and conserves resources.

These are some great numbers, and Chevy’s commitment to providing their customers with knowledge about their product is more than commendable. Creating their own “organic car” label is an insightful way to get this information out to the people who want to see it, including those of us who are looking to buy a car but may not be able to shell out the money for a hybrid or an EV. The EcoLogic scorecard shows potential car buyers all the other things that their friendly neighborhood car company is doing to help the environment that can’t be measured in miles per gallon.

This being said, some of these facts can be a bit misleading, particularly numbers that account for how recyclable their vehicles are. According to the United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR), more than 95% of all end-of-life cars—including Chevy and most of its competitors—are already being recycled with absolutely no cost to consumers or taxpayers. USCAR also states, “More than 84 percent, by weight, of each end-of-life vehicle is recycled.”

Buying a mattress is a big deal. As mentioned in my previous post, the average person spends a decent amount of time in bed- nearly 1/3 of your life!

Keeping that in mind, you should know exactly what materials you are sleeping on every night. A lot of conventional mattresses contain chemicals and artificial products that could be harmful to your health. Flame-retardants, boric acid and potent insecticides, just to name a few. It is important to research your mattress and find out exactly what materials or chemicals your body could be absorbing every night.

For a sneak peak into the world of poly-foams, poly-fibers and other materials used in conventional mattresses, you can check out Savvy Rest’s mattress morgue.

Luckily, there is good news for the savvy and eco-conscious mattress consumer. Organic mattresses are an excellent alternative to conventional mattresses because they are made with all natural and organic products such as latex, cotton and wool.

Organic mattresses were an absolute must in the Rocky River Green Home as they support environmental sustainability while providing a safe and comfortable sleep.

Homeowner and CEO & Founder of Organic Spa Magazine, Bev Maloney-Fischback firmly believes in the product that Savvy Rest offers. “We love the quality and authenticity of Savvy Rest‘s products and feel good knowing that we are all sleeping on organic mattresses. We have even noticed a difference in my younger son’s health when it comes to having less allergy symptoms overall and we know it has to do with the fact that he is now sleeping on organic mattresses and pillows.”

Allergens are an important health issue when it comes to pillows and mattresses. Dust mites, microscopic insects that are a common component of house dust, set up housekeeping inside most mattresses, and their droppings can trigger allergic responses. People typically notice reduced allergy symptoms when sleeping on an organic mattress because the materials used are all natural and chemical free.

The Savvy Rest mattresses featured in the home are made from exclusively organic materials. The organic wool is a natural insulator free of synthetic chemicals. The wool is cleaned without bleach or solvents making it very appealing and also very comfortable. Wool also promotes a more relaxing and cozy sleep environment because it doesn’t develop hot or cold spots. The organic wool is slow burning and does not quickly ignite, meaning that these mattresses meet federal safety standards without having to use harmful chemicals, a very appealing factor for families.

Another component to these mattresses is organic cotton, a plant that is sustainable, chemical free and supports local farmers. To read more about the health and environmental benefits of organic cotton, click here.

The final component is organic latex. The Dunlop latex that Savvy Rest uses is certified organic on both ends, the rubber tree plantations are USDA organic and the natural processing is also certified organic to the Global Organic Latex Standard.

All of these organic materials go into making a Savvy Rest mattress that offers consumers purity, comfort, integrity and long-lasting value.

While I was at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show in New York City I saw a lot of great furniture made from FSC certified wood. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) offers a third party certification process that ensures the responsible management of forests in regards to their environmental, social and economic impacts. It’s a very thorough process with an environmental policy that includes for example the protection of water quality and prohibits the harvest of rare old-growth forests.

Whenever I buy paper products I look for the FSC certified logo. Yet I wonder every time, if it’s really acceptable to cut down wood even that it’s sustainably harvested. That’s why I found it so refreshing when I met David Stine with his eco-friendly furniture collection made from dead or dying trees at the trade show. He’s the fourth generation steward to his family’s land in Illinois where he sustainably harvests and mills his own lumber. If I had the choice between FSC certified wood or wood made from dead or dying trees I would probably choose the latter as long as it’s well-preserved. Especially when it’s selected through David’s keen eye for a beautiful piece of furniture. Each piece is one-of-a-kind revealing the natural beauty of the wood with all its graining, knots and live edges. The designer crafts everything by hand while combining traditional craftsmanship with sustainability beautifully.

David’s furniture collection includes dining room tables, desks, beds, coffee tables, benches and seating. I love how he lets nature define his designs by highlighting the natural edge of the logs. My favorites are the Stephanie Bed with a curved walnut headboard slap in a walnut frame or the Amagansett Coffee Table with a single, live-edge board of black walnut as a top. Make sure to check out the Strawn Dining Table that features a single board top of a very thick, live-edge Sycamore that seats 12 people and is finished with linseed oil. Looks like the perfect setting for a farm-to-table meal with friends or family.

I have incorporated several techniques from an ancient health and wellness tradition into my Slow Beauty practice. Among them are Tongue Scraping, Abhyanga, Dry Brushing and Padabhyanga. These techniques are from the 5,000 year strong Indian health and wellness tradition Ayurveda, a Sanskrit word meaning “the knowledge for long life”. I use the above-mentioned techniques to elevate my beauty routine to a beauty ritual because beauty is so much more than “anti-aging” lotions and potions. Together these techniques release toxins, strengthen the body, boost the immune system and slow down the aging process; and these are only a few of the benefits they offer.

Tongue Scraping: The body releases toxins while we sleep. Many of these toxins deposit themselves on the surface of our tongue. Scraping the tongue each morning removes the toxins. Tongue scraping also boosts the immune system by warding off sinus related infections and promotes dental health. Scraping the tongue helps to avoid bad breathe by removing bacteria, and also enhances our sense of taste. It is also said to gently stimulate the internal organs. When I learned that tongue scraping is related to our organs I was intrigued, and when I delved a little deeper an entire world on the tongue was revealed. The tongue, it turns out, is a mirror reflection of our organs.

Try this at home: Stick out your tongue in front of the mirror. Do you “see” your organs? In the front of your tongue you will find your lungs, heart, chest and neck (left side , left lung, right side right lung with the heart, chest and neck in between) In the center part of your tongue is your stomach and pancreas (middle center), on either side the spleen (left) and liver (right). The rear of the tongue relates to the intestines and colon (center) and the left and right kidney (left and right respectively). In the Ayurvedic tradition this is known as tongue diagnosis. An Ayurvedic specialist will look at your tongue and note discoloration and or sensitivity of a particular area to determine the health status of an organ. And when we practice tongue scraping daily we are subtly cleansing our organs.

How to Use: Scrape daily on an empty stomach using a metal tongue scraper. Place the scraper at the back of the tongue and gently scrape from back to front 7 – 10 times. Make sure to scrape the entire tongue. If you are interested in purchasing a tongue scraper I recommend Dr. Tung’s. Made from stainless steel it’s easy to clean and more gentle on the tongue than a plastic version. They also come in a variety of fun colors. You can purchase on line at drtungs.com or find it at your local Whole Foods market. (Do not use a toothbrush to scrape your tongue as that will have the opposite effect of pushing bacteria and toxins into the tongue.)

Beauty Is Wellness: Spring Beauty Food—Strawberries

If you’ve been following along with the Beauty Is Wellness posts from the past few weeks, you know that spring is the season of detox, and that your BFFs for detoxifying from the inside-out are fresh spring greens. Maybe you’ve even made my Wild Rice Detox Salad, or dressed up a bowl full of fresh greens with one of my beautifying dressings. But sometimes even greens need to be set aside for something sweeter. This week cooking with a juicy spring fruit that’s packed with benefits for your skin, eyes, teeth and body: the strawberry.

Although you can find strawberries year-round, they’ll be a ready for local harvest in much of the country in a few short weeks. This is the moment when they’ll taste best and will be packed with the most beauty nutrition. Whether you pick your own or buy strawberries in the grocery store, choose organic only, since conventional strawberries are on the Dirty Dozen list of the most pesticide-laden foods. Pesticides add toxins back into your body after you’ve been working so hard to usher them out!

Strawberries are powerful boosters for your skin, eyes and immunity, thanks to their high levels of collagen-building, anti-inflammatory vitamin C. One cup of strawberry halves has one and a half times your vitamin C needs for the day, even more than you’ll get in a whole orange. In one study of foods eaten in the U.S., strawberries were ranked as the 4th best fruit source of antioxidants, behind blackberries, cranberries and raspberries. Strawberries are also loaded with manganese, a mineral that defends against aging by helping protect your mitochondria. Strawberries contain a powerful plant compound called ellagic acid that helps steady your blood sugar—a must for preventing wrinkles and blemishes—and has anti-cancer properties. You may have also heard that strawberries are also uniquely beneficial to your teeth, thanks to their natural whitening and plaque-clearing abilities.

Ready to get picking? For a spring beauty recipe that’s packed with sweet strawberries (but no refined sugar, synthetic flavor or colors), try this fresh take on rice pudding:

Stewed Strawberry Pudding with Strawberry-Maca Sauce

This rice pudding-like dessert uses millet (a protein-rich seed that’s high in calming, mood-boosting amino acids) in place of rice. Maca powder is an unusual ingredient that you can find in a health food store—it’s said to be powerful for energy and libido. You might also want to serve this dish for breakfast, with or without the maple syrup.

Serves 4

1/2 cup dry millet, rinsed and drained

2 cups unsweetened almond milk

3 cups quartered strawberries, divided

1/8 tsp salt

1/4 tsp ground cardamom

sprinkle of ground cloves

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tbsp pure maple syrup

1/4 tsp maca powder

2 tbsp water

In a saucepan over medium-high heat, combine millet, almond milk, 1 1/2 cups of quartered strawberries, salt, cardamom, and a pinch of cloves. When the almond milk starts to bubble, reduce the heat to low and cook 15 minutes more, until the millet is soft. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and maple syrup. Set aside to cool. In a high-powered blender or food processor, blend 1 cup quartered strawberries, water, and maca until silky smooth. Top each serving of pudding with strawberry sauce and remaining strawberries.
